Home care vs. home health care: which do we need?

Families mix these up constantly. Here is how to tell which one fits.

They sound almost identical, and even hospitals sometimes use the terms loosely. But home care and home health care are different services, paid for differently, for different needs.

Home care (non-medical)

This is help with daily life: companionship, personal care like bathing and dressing, meal support, errands, light housekeeping, supervision for someone with dementia, and respite for family caregivers. No doctor’s order is needed. It is usually private pay, though long-term care insurance may reimburse you. This is what Sonoran Comfort First Home Care does.

Home health care (medical)

This is clinical care at home: skilled nursing, physical or occupational therapy, wound care, injections, medication management. It requires a doctor’s order, and it is often covered by Medicare or health insurance for a limited time after a hospitalization.

Can you use both?

Yes — and many families do. A nurse might visit twice a week for wound care while a home care aide helps with bathing and meals every day. They solve different problems.

How to decide

Ask one question: does my loved one need medical tasks, or help with daily living? If it is medications, bathing, meals, company, and supervision — that is home care. If it is nursing, therapy, or wound care — that is home health, and you will need a doctor’s order.

Still unsure? Call us and describe what is going on. If what you need is medical, we will tell you honestly and point you toward the right kind of provider — we would rather lose a call than take on care we cannot do well.
